Civil Rights
While some historians point to the 1950s as the beginning of the Civil Rights movement, the argument can be made that it started in the Progressive Era. With the abolition of slavery only decades prior and the establishment of new and harsh Jim Crow laws in the south, the rise of certain individuals gave voice to the newly franchised African American community.
Two such men to gain fame and following in the era were W.E.B DuBois and Booker T. Washington. Read each of their views on civil rights and the state of the black community.
